What You Need Before You Start

Four prerequisites β€” miss any of these and recording will either fail outright or behave unpredictably.

Required

TiviMate Premium

Recording is Premium only. The free version has no recording capability at all β€” no manual record, no scheduling, no timeshift.

Storage

External storage

USB drive via OTG cable on Firestick. Firestick internal storage is too small for anything serious. Android TV boxes with large internal storage can record internally. Minimum 64GB recommended.

Server-side

Provider that allows recording

Some providers block recording at the server level. If every channel fails, this is the cause β€” it cannot be bypassed from TiviMate. You need a different provider.

Network

Stable internet

Minimum 10 Mbps for HD. The connection must stay stable for the entire duration of the recording β€” a dropout corrupts the file. Ethernet strongly recommended.

How Much Storage Do You Actually Need

This is where almost every recording guide fails users. They say "use a USB drive" without explaining how quickly recordings fill it. Here are the real numbers.

Too small

32 GB

8–16 episodes or 8–12 hours of HD. Fills in a weekend of casual use.

Minimum

64 GB

16–32 episodes or 16–24 hours. Workable but you will be deleting often.

Recommended

128 GB

32–64 episodes or 32–48 hours. The sweet spot for most households.

Heavy use

256 GB+

64–128 episodes or 64–96 hours. Best for series recording and 4K content.

File size reference
Single 1080p episode (40–50 min): 2–4 GB Β· 90-minute football match: 4–8 GB Β· 2-hour film: 5–10 GB Β· 4K uses 2–3Γ— more storage than 1080p. Recordings save as standard MP4 / TS β€” playable on any device.

Recommendation: get a 128GB USB 3.0 drive minimum. USB 3.0 (not 2.0) means faster write speeds and less risk of dropped frames during recording. SSDs are the most reliable for heavy recording use but any quality USB 3.0 drive works fine for occasional recordings.

Setting Up USB Storage on Firestick β€” The Part Everyone Gets Wrong

This is the section most recording guides skip or get wrong. On older Firesticks (Fire OS 7) the process is simple. On newer Firesticks running Fire OS 8 β€” the 2nd gen 4K and 4K Max β€” stricter file access permissions mean TiviMate cannot directly access your USB drive without an extra step.

First β€” The Hardware Setup

Fire OS 7

Straightforward

A powered OTG cable connects the Firestick and USB drive simultaneously. The "powered" part is essential β€” it provides power AND USB connection. Drive shows up in TiviMate immediately.

Fire OS 8

2nd gen 4K and 4K Max

Stricter Android 11 permissions. TiviMate cannot directly access USB β€” access has to be granted through the system Files app picker. Requires a USB keyboard connected at the same time via a USB hub.

⚠ Firestick has one USB port
You need a powered OTG cable with power pass-through OR a USB hub. Without this the device loses power the moment you connect a USB drive and reboots in a loop.
βœ“ What to buy
Search for "Firestick powered OTG cable" β€” it has a micro-USB for the Firestick, a full-size USB port for your drive, and a micro-USB or USB-C input for the original Firestick power adapter.

Fire OS 8 β€” Granting USB Access to TiviMate

If you have a 2nd gen Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max, here is the full process to grant TiviMate access to your USB drive.

  1. Connect hub, keyboard and drive simultaneously Use a powered OTG cable or USB hub to connect the Firestick, USB drive and a USB keyboard at the same time.
    ⚠ Keyboard required
The Firestick remote cannot navigate the Android system Files app picker. A USB keyboard (or wireless keyboard with USB dongle) is mandatory for this one-time setup.
  2. Trigger the Android Files picker from inside TiviMate This opens the system Files app picker β€” not TiviMate's own browser. That is the whole point.
  3. Navigate to the USB drive and grant permission Using the keyboard, navigate to the USB drive, select or create a folder called TIVIMATE, tap Use This Folder and confirm the permission prompt.
    βœ“ One-time only
Once granted, TiviMate keeps this permission across reboots. You won't need the keyboard again unless you change drives.
  4. Test with a manual recording Play any channel, press Up on the remote and choose Record. Stop it after 30 seconds and confirm the file appears under TiviMate home β†’ Recordings.

Setting the Recording Storage Location

On Android TV boxes (or once the Fire OS 8 permission is granted) tell TiviMate where to save recordings.

Tip
Create a dedicated folder on the USB drive called TIVIMATE or RECORDINGS before doing this. Keeping recordings in their own folder makes them much easier to find when you later copy them to a PC.

How to Record β€” Four Methods

TiviMate Premium gives you four ways to capture content. Each one suits a different situation.

Quickest

1 Β· Manual recording now

Play the channel, press Up on the remote, choose Record. Recording starts immediately. Up again β†’ Stop Recording to finish.

βœ“ Keeps running
Recording continues even if you change channels β€” useful for grabbing one programme while you watch another.
Most useful

2 Β· Schedule from EPG

Open the EPG, highlight a programme, long-press OK β†’ Schedule Recording β†’ confirm time. TiviMate adds it to the schedule and starts automatically.

⚠ Device must be awake
TiviMate does not wake the device from standby. The device must be on and TiviMate must be running when the recording is due to start.
Premium

3 Β· Series recording

EPG β†’ find any episode β†’ long-press OK β†’ Record Series. TiviMate records every future episode automatically.

Note
Requires provider EPG with series metadata. Many cheaper providers don't include series info β€” in that case series recording silently records nothing.
Premium

4 Β· Pause and timeshift

Press Pause while watching. TiviMate buffers the live stream to storage. Rewind to any point since you paused.

⚠ Temporary
Timeshift buffer is wiped when you change channel or close TiviMate. It is not a permanent recording.

The Recording Settings That Actually Matter

Most guides tell you to set a recording folder and leave it at that. These two settings make a real difference.

Set to 2 min

Start recording before program start

EPG times are sometimes inaccurate and streams sometimes start a minute or two early. A 2-minute buffer guarantees you never miss the opening of a programme.

Set to 5 min (15–20 for sport)

End recording after program end

Live events almost always overrun their EPG end time. Five minutes covers most overruns; bump it to 15–20 minutes for football, F1, boxing or any unpredictable live sport.

Accessing and Managing Your Recordings

Playback

Watch in TiviMate

TiviMate home β†’ Recordings. Full pause, rewind and fast-forward available inside the player.

Export

Copy to PC

Eject the USB drive safely first, then plug it into a PC. Recordings copy like any normal video file and play in VLC or any modern player.

⚠ Always eject
Pulling the drive without ejecting can corrupt in-progress recordings and the file index.
Cleanup

Delete recordings

TiviMate β†’ Recordings β†’ long-press a recording β†’ Delete. Or delete from the drive on a PC. TiviMate never auto-deletes β€” you manage space manually.

Planning

View scheduled recordings

TiviMate home β†’ Scheduled Recordings. See everything queued, edit times or cancel before it runs.

Recording Not Working β€” Fixes

Server-side

All channels fail to record

Provider is blocking recording at the server level. Cannot be bypassed from TiviMate. Test one channel first β€” if every one fails, you need a provider that allows recording. See our best IPTV services guide.

Permissions

Cannot access USB

Fire OS 8 permission issue. You need a USB keyboard and hub to grant access through the system Files picker β€” see Section 3 above.

Timing

Scheduled recording missed

Either EPG timezone is wrong or the device was asleep. Fix the offset at Settings β–Έ EPG β–Έ EPG Time Offset. Device must stay on and TiviMate running at recording time.

File integrity

Corrupted recording

USB drive removed unsafely or the connection dropped mid-record. Always stop the recording first and eject safely. Use Ethernet for long recordings.

Storage

No space error

USB drive is full. TiviMate never auto-deletes. Delete old recordings manually or move them to a PC to free space.
