M3U vs Xtream Codes β€” How EPG Works Differently for Each

This is the most important thing to understand before any EPG setup. Most guides skip it entirely β€” but how your playlist is connected changes everything about how EPG behaves.

M3U playlist

EPG is separate β€” you add it manually

  • EPG not included β€” needs a separate XMLTV URL
  • More prone to channel ID mismatches
  • Catch-up support is limited
  • You manage two URLs β€” playlist and EPG
Xtream Codes

EPG comes through the API automatically

  • EPG included automatically via the API
  • Cleaner channel ID matching
  • Catch-up works correctly
  • One set of credentials, EPG just appears
πŸ’‘ Tip
If you have persistent EPG problems with M3U, ask your provider for Xtream Codes credentials instead β€” it eliminates the main source of mismatches.

How to Add EPG to TiviMate β€” Step by Step

Five steps. The third one is where most guides cut off and where most setups silently break β€” adding a source is not the same as assigning it.

  1. Open EPG settings The EPG menu is buried two levels deep in TiviMate's settings.
  2. Add EPG source URL Paste the XMLTV URL from your provider or one of the free sources below.
    ⚠ No URL?
If your provider did not supply one, use a free source from Section 3 or switch your playlist to Xtream Codes β€” EPG comes automatically.
  3. Assign EPG source to playlist This is the step most setups miss. Simply adding the source is not enough β€” you must assign it to the playlist or nothing shows up.
  4. Update EPG and wait First load takes 5–15 minutes depending on the file size and your connection. Do not close the app during the first sync.
  5. Set automatic update schedule Set once and forget. The guide will refresh itself daily in the background.
    βœ“ Done
EPG is configured. Within 15 minutes you should see programme information on every channel that matches your source.

Fixing the Channel ID Mismatch β€” The Most Overlooked Problem

This affects M3U users specifically and almost no guide explains it properly. Your guide shows "No Information" on certain channels even after EPG is set up correctly. The reason is a channel ID mismatch.

Every channel in your M3U playlist has a tag called tvg-id. Every channel in your EPG source has a matching ID. TiviMate matches them automatically when you update EPG. If the IDs do not match β€” even if the channel name is identical β€” TiviMate cannot connect that channel to its programme data and shows "No Information."

This happens most often with regional channel variants, sports channels, and channels your provider added recently without updating their EPG IDs.

  1. Identify channels showing "No Information" Browse your guide and note which channels are missing programme data despite EPG being loaded.
  2. Open Channel Details Long-press the affected channel to open the details panel.
  3. Manually assign the right EPG entry Search for the channel's correct EPG ID and pick it from the list.
    βœ“ Permanent
The assignment stays permanently. You only need to do this once per channel β€” even after EPG updates.
  4. If many channels are mismatched Doing this for 50 channels is not realistic. Contact your provider for an updated M3U with corrected tvg-id tags, or switch to Xtream Codes.

EPG Shows Wrong Times β€” The Timezone Fix

If your programme guide shows the right shows but at the wrong times β€” everything shifted by one or two hours β€” this is a timezone problem. It gets worse around daylight saving time changes and is rarely fixed correctly because most guides only mention one of the two timezone settings you need to check.

πŸ•

Fix 1 β€” Check device timezone

The Firestick or Android TV system clock must be set to your actual region. A wrong system timezone will shift the entire guide.

βš™οΈ

Fix 2 β€” TiviMate EPG time offset

TiviMate has a separate offset on top of the device timezone. Set it to 0 unless you need a manual correction, then adjust in 1-hour increments only if needed.

πŸ’‘ Check both
This is why timezone fixes "don't work" for most people β€” they fix device timezone but leave a stale TiviMate offset, or vice versa. Both must be right.

EPG Crashing Your Device During Update

If TiviMate crashes or your Firestick freezes every time EPG tries to update, the EPG file is too large for your device to process. This specifically affects older Firestick models with 1GB RAM and devices with limited storage.

Global EPG files covering all channels from all countries can exceed 50MB. Older devices simply cannot handle files that large in memory.

  1. Ask your provider for a regional EPG option Many providers offer separate EPG files filtered by country (UK only, US only, etc.) β€” a fraction of the size of the global file.
  2. Use Bevy.be regional files Instead of a global EPG source, add country-specific Bevy files for only the regions you actually watch. A UK-only file is typically under 5MB versus 50MB+ global.
  3. Clear EPG data and reduce your sources If you have multiple EPG sources, remove the largest ones and keep only the one most relevant to your channels.

EPG Maintenance β€” Stop Problems Before They Start

Most EPG problems are not from a bad setup β€” they come from neglect. A simple routine keeps the guide fast and accurate year-round.

πŸ”„

Automatic β€” daily

EPG updates itself once you set the interval. Set this once and never think about it again.

πŸ“…

Weekly β€” refresh playlist

Picks up new channels and removes dead ones. Keeps the guide aligned with what your provider actually streams.

🧹

Monthly β€” clear cache

EPG cache will fill the entire 8GB Firestick storage if neglected. A monthly clear prevents storage-related crashes.

πŸ’Ύ

As needed β€” check storage

Keep at least 500MB free on the device for EPG updates and player buffers. Low storage is a hidden cause of update failures.
