Soft Reset vs Factory Reset β€” Know the Difference First

Most guides treat these as the same thing. They are not. One takes 30 seconds and loses nothing. The other takes 10 minutes and erases everything. Pick the right one before you start.

βœ“ Try this first

Soft Reset (Restart)

  • Data lostNone β€” preserved
  • Apps lostNone β€” all stay
  • Settings lostNone β€” all stay
  • Time30–60 seconds
Use when Firestick is frozen or slow, apps are crashing, streaming is buffering, general sluggish performance.
⚠ Last resort only

Factory Reset

  • Data lostEverything β€” no undo
  • Apps lostAll apps deleted
  • Settings lostAll wiped
  • Time5–10 minutes
Use when Selling or giving away, soft reset did not fix the problem, device is completely unresponsive, forgotten parental control PIN.
Always try a soft reset first. It fixes the vast majority of Firestick issues β€” frozen screens, slow performance, app crashes, buffering β€” without deleting anything. Factory reset is the nuclear option.

Method 1 β€” Soft Reset (Restart) via Remote Shortcut

The fastest way to restart a Firestick. The shortcut method works even when the screen is frozen and you cannot navigate menus.

1 Remote Shortcut

FASTEST Β· Works on a frozen screen
Select + Play/Pause hold 5 seconds
  1. Press and hold the Select button and the Play/Pause button simultaneously.
  2. Hold for 5 seconds without releasing.
  3. The Firestick screen goes black and restarts automatically.
βœ“ Why this works
The shortcut communicates with the firmware directly, so it works even when the home screen is completely frozen.

2 Through Settings Menu

Use when the screen is responsive
  1. From the home screen, go to Settings (gear icon).
  2. Select My Fire TV.
  3. Select Restart.
  4. Select Restart again to confirm.

Method 2 β€” Factory Reset via Settings Menu

The standard factory reset. Use this when soft reset has not fixed the problem, you are preparing to sell the device, or you have forgotten your parental control PIN.

βœ— Point of no return
This permanently deletes all apps, downloads, account information, and settings. There is no undo. Do not unplug the Firestick during the reset β€” pulling power mid-wipe can brick the device.
  1. Go to Settings from the home screenFrom the Fire TV home screen, navigate up to the menu bar and select the gear icon.
  2. Select My Fire TVOlder models may label this menu as Device or Device & Software.
  3. Select Reset to Factory DefaultsThis is the point of no return β€” confirm you really want to wipe the device.
  4. Enter your PIN if promptedIf you have forgotten the PIN use the remote-shortcut method below β€” it bypasses the PIN entirely.
  5. Select Reset to confirmThe wipe begins immediately. Firestick screen goes black and the Amazon logo appears.
  6. Wait 5 to 10 minutes β€” do not unplugThe Firestick will reboot several times during the wipe. Leave it alone until the setup wizard appears.
    βœ“ Success indicator
Setup wizard appears = factory reset complete. The Firestick is now completely clean.

Method 3 β€” Factory Reset via Remote Shortcut

Use this when the screen is frozen and you cannot navigate to Settings β€” or when you have forgotten the parental control PIN.

Back + Right β–Ά hold 10 seconds
  1. Make sure the Firestick is powered on and connected to the TVHDMI input on the TV must be set to the Firestick port. The screen does not have to be responsive β€” it just has to be powered.
  2. Press and hold Back + Right directional button simultaneouslyUse the round directional pad β€” the right arrow. Hold both buttons together.
  3. Hold both buttons for at least 10 secondsKeep holding even if the screen flickers or briefly goes blank.
  4. A pop-up appears asking you to confirm factory resetThis shortcut bypasses the parental control PIN entirely.
  5. Select Reset to confirmThe wipe begins. Wait 5–10 minutes without unplugging.
    β“˜ When this method shines
This shortcut works even when the home screen is frozen β€” the firmware listens for the button combo at all times.

Method 4 β€” Reset Without a Remote

If you do not have a working remote you can still reset your Firestick using the free Amazon Fire TV app on your phone, or by connecting a USB keyboard via OTG adapter.

1 Amazon Fire TV Phone App

RECOMMENDED Β· Free on iOS and Android
  1. Download the free Amazon Fire TV app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Connect your phone to the same WiFi as the Firestick.
  3. Open the app β€” your Firestick appears in the device list β€” tap to connect.
  4. Use the app to navigate to Settings β†’ My Fire TV β†’ Reset to Factory Defaults.
  5. Confirm the reset β€” wait 5 to 10 minutes.
β“˜ Required
Phone and Firestick must be on the same WiFi network for the app to detect the device.

2 USB Keyboard via OTG Adapter

FALLBACK Β· For when WiFi is unavailable
  1. Connect a USB keyboard or mouse using a micro USB OTG adapter.
  2. Navigate the Fire TV interface using keyboard arrow keys (or the mouse).
  3. Go to Settings β†’ My Fire TV β†’ Reset to Factory Defaults and confirm.
βœ“ Works on every Firestick
Fire OS treats USB input devices as native β€” no driver setup required.

What Happens After a Factory Reset

Four things change. Know all four before you start so the setup wizard does not catch you out.

Everything deleted
All apps, downloads, settings, WiFi passwords, and account info permanently erased.
Sign in to Amazon again
Sign in to your Amazon account during the setup wizard to relink the Firestick.
Reconnect to WiFi
WiFi password is erased. Have it ready before launching the setup wizard.
Reinstall all apps
Every app needs reinstalling. Amazon apps reappear automatically once you sign in.

Common Reasons to Reset and What Actually Fixes Them

Match your symptom to the right starting point. Most problems are fixed in the Try First column β€” only escalate to If That Fails when needed.

Clearing App Cache β€” Between Soft Reset and Factory Reset

If your Firestick is slow or a specific app keeps crashing, clearing the cache for that app is the most targeted fix β€” faster than a factory reset and more effective than a soft reset for app-specific issues.

  1. Go to Settings β†’ Applications β†’ Manage Installed ApplicationsThis menu lists every installed app and lets you clear cache, clear data, or uninstall.
  2. Scroll to the app causing problems and select itNetflix, Prime Video, your IPTV player app β€” whichever is misbehaving.
  3. Select Clear CacheThis removes temporary files only β€” your login and preferences stay intact.
  4. Do NOT select Clear Data
    βœ— Avoid Clear Data
Clear Data completely resets the app including all login credentials and personal settings within it. Only use it if you want a fully fresh app install.

For general Firestick slowness: clear the cache for your most-used apps one by one β€” Netflix, Prime Video, your IPTV player. This often restores performance without a full factory reset.
