Try This First β Before Any Reset
Before going through a full reset try these quick fixes. They solve about 70% of remote issues in under 2 minutes:
- Replace batteries with fresh AAA batteriesLow batteries cause most remote failures. Always start here β even if the batteries seem fine, Bluetooth fails before all buttons stop working.
- Unplug Firestick for 60 seconds then replugWait a full 60 seconds. This clears Bluetooth memory. When the home screen reappears, hold
Homefor 10 seconds to re-pair. - Move within 10 feet of the FirestickFirestick remotes use Bluetooth, not infrared. Stand close during any reset or pairing attempt β walls and cabinets cut range.
- Check for too many paired Bluetooth devicesFirestick supports a maximum of 7 Bluetooth devices. Go to
Settings β Controllers and Bluetooth Devicesand remove anything unused.
Reset Method A β Alexa Voice Remote 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen, and Pro
This covers the most common remote shipped with Firestick 4K Max and most current Firestick models. The full reset combo is three buttons held simultaneously.
- Unplug Firestick from power and wait 60 secondsPull the power cable from the wall. A full 60-second wait empties the Bluetooth pairing cache on the device side.
- Hold Left + Back + Menu simultaneously for 12 secondsPress all three buttons at the same time and hold without releasing. The LED on the remote blinks during this process β keep holding until 12 seconds have passed.
- Release buttons and wait 5 secondsDo not press anything. Let the remote settle.
- Remove batteries from the remote and wait 30 secondsThis drains any residual charge inside the remote and forces a clean memory state.
- Plug Firestick back in and wait for full home screenThe Fire TV home screen must fully appear before you proceed β usually 30β45 seconds.
- Reinsert fresh batteries then hold Home for 10 secondsPress and hold the round Home button continuously until the LED blinks orange.
β Success indicatorLED flashes blue 3 times and Remote Connected appears on screen = successfully reset and re-paired.
Reset Method B β Alexa Voice Remote 1st Generation
The 1st gen Alexa Voice Remote has a microphone button but no volume or power buttons. The reset combination is different from newer models.
- Unplug Firestick from power and wait 60 secondsPull the power cable from the wall. Full 60-second wait is required.
- Hold Left + Menu simultaneously for 12 secondsPress both buttons at once and keep holding without releasing.
- Release and wait 5 secondsDo not press anything in this window.
- Remove batteries and wait 30 secondsTake both AAA batteries out completely.
- Plug Firestick back in and wait for full home screenDo not proceed until the Fire TV home screen is fully loaded.
- Reinsert fresh batteries and press Home to re-pairIf pairing does not happen immediately, hold
Homefor 10 seconds.β Success indicatorA blue LED blink confirms successful reset and pairing.
Reset Method C β Basic Edition Remote
The Basic Edition remote has the fewest buttons and requires a unique reset sequence β different from every Alexa Voice Remote model. It is a press-counted sequence, not a hold combination.
- Hold Home and press Menu 3 timesKeep the Home button pressed down the entire time. Do not release Home yet.
- Release Home then press Menu 9 more timesLet go of Home, then continue pressing Menu. The grand total is 12 Menu presses.
- Remove batteries and unplug Firestick. Wait 60 secondsBoth must be powered down at the same time for the reset to take.
- Plug Firestick back in and reinsert batteries while it bootsInsert the batteries at the same moment the Firestick begins booting. Timing matters here.
- Hold Home for 40 seconds once the home screen appearsThis is significantly longer than other models β 40 seconds is correct for Basic Edition. Do not let go early.
β Success indicatorRemote Connected on screen confirms successful reset.
Reset via Firestick Menu β Works for All Remote Models
If your remote is partially working β enough to navigate menus β you can reset and unpair it through the Firestick settings. This is the cleanest method when available because the device handles the pairing wipe internally.
- Go to SettingsFrom the Fire TV home screen, navigate up to the top menu bar and select the gear icon.
- Go to Controllers and Bluetooth DevicesThis menu manages every paired remote, controller, and audio device on the Firestick.
- Select Amazon Fire TV RemotesOpens the list of every Firestick remote currently paired.
- Select your remote, press the Menu button, then choose UnpairHighlighting the remote and pressing Menu opens the action overlay.
- Re-pair by holding Home for 10 secondsStand within 10 feet. LED blinks orange. Remote Connected appears when done.

Remote Still Not Working After Reset β Troubleshooting
If the reset finished but the remote still will not pair or keeps disconnecting, work through the four scenarios below in order.
When to Reset vs When to Re-Pair
These two sound similar but fix different problems. Knowing which one applies saves time β re-pairing takes 30 seconds, a full reset takes several minutes.
| Situation | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Remote suddenly stopped working | RE-PAIRHold Home 10 seconds. Faster and fixes most issues. |
| Remote unresponsive after Firestick update | RE-PAIRFirmware updates sometimes drop Bluetooth connections. |
| Remote worked briefly then stopped again | FULL RESETCorrupted pairing data that re-pairing alone will not clear. |
| New replacement remote will not connect | RE-PAIRHold Home 10 seconds with fresh batteries. |
| Remote buttons lag or respond incorrectly | FULL RESETButton lag is usually corrupted pairing memory. |
| Remote works on some buttons but not others | FULL RESETPartial responses indicate corrupted data, not a lost connection. |
| Nothing has worked after multiple attempts | RESET + RE-PAIRLast step before buying a replacement. |
