Identify Your Situation First

The right method depends on which problem you actually have. Pick your situation below and jump straight to that method.

Situation A

Remote lost or broken

Firestick still connected to your home WiFi. No remote to operate it.

Method 1 β€” Fire TV App
Situation B

WiFi password changed or moved house

Firestick searching for old network. App cannot find it because Firestick is offline. Needs 2 phones.

Method 2 β€” Hotspot Trick
Situation C

TV supports HDMI-CEC

Samsung Anynet+, LG SimpLink, Sony Bravia Sync or similar. TV remote can control Firestick.

Method 3 β€” HDMI-CEC
Situation D

Amazon Echo available

Echo on same Amazon account. Alexa can navigate to WiFi settings but cannot type passwords.

Method 4 β€” Alexa
Situation E

Nothing else available

No second phone, no CEC, no Alexa. Requires OTG adapter and USB keyboard.

Method 5 β€” OTG Keyboard

Method 1 β€” Fire TV App on Your Phone

Best for Situation A β€” remote lost but Firestick still connected to your WiFi. The Amazon Fire TV app is free and turns any iPhone or Android phone into a full Firestick remote.

β“˜ Key requirement
Your phone and Firestick must be on the same WiFi network. If your Firestick is offline use Method 2 instead.
  1. Download the Amazon Fire TV appAvailable free on the App Store and Google Play. Make sure your phone is on the same WiFi as the Firestick.
  2. Open the app and select your FirestickYour Firestick appears in the device list β€” tap it to start pairing.
  3. Enter the 4-digit pairing code shown on TVThe code appears on the TV screen. Type it into the app to complete pairing.
  4. Navigate to Settings β†’ Network and connect to WiFiThe app keyboard makes password entry easy.
    βœ“ Success
Firestick is now connected to WiFi and controlled from your phone.

Method 2 β€” The Hotspot Trick

Best for Situation B β€” WiFi password changed, moved to a new network, or Firestick is offline. This is the cleverest method and the one most people do not know about. The Firestick remembers the name and password of the last WiFi network it was connected to. If you create a mobile hotspot with the exact same name and password, the Firestick connects automatically β€” thinking it found its old network. You then use a second phone running the Fire TV app to navigate to Settings and switch to the new WiFi.

What you need: 2 phones or a phone and tablet. The old WiFi network name (SSID) and password.

⚠ Must match exactly
The SSID and password must match your old WiFi exactly β€” including capital letters and spaces.
  1. Phone ACreate mobile hotspot with exact old WiFi name and passwordTurn hotspot ON.
  2. Wait 30 to 60 seconds for Firestick to auto-connectThe home screen loads on TV when successful.
  3. Phone BConnect Phone B to Phone A's hotspot and open Fire TV appFirestick appears in the device list.
  4. Phone BNavigate to Settings β†’ NetworkSelect the new WiFi and enter the new password using the app keyboard.
  5. Turn off Phone A's hotspotThe Firestick stays on the new WiFi.
    βœ“ Success
Firestick is now on your new WiFi. The hotspot is no longer needed.

Method 3 β€” HDMI-CEC via TV Remote

Best for Situation C β€” your TV supports CEC and you have your TV remote. HDMI-CEC is a feature built into most modern TVs that allows one remote to control multiple HDMI devices. When enabled on both your TV and Firestick, your standard TV remote can navigate the Firestick menus β€” including WiFi settings.

Every TV brand calls it something different

Samsung
Anynet+
LG
SimpLink
Sony

Hisense
HDMI-CEC
  1. Enable CEC on your TVGo to your TV Settings menu and turn on the feature using the brand name from the grid above.
  2. Switch TV to the Firestick HDMI inputUse the TV remote's Input or Source button.
  3. Use TV remote arrow keys and OK button to navigate FirestickGo to Settings β†’ Network and connect to WiFi.
⚠ CEC must be on both sides
CEC must be enabled on both devices. Firestick has CEC enabled by default β€” only enable it on the TV side.

Method 4 β€” Alexa Voice Commands

Best for Situation D β€” you have an Amazon Echo on the same Amazon account. If your Amazon Echo speaker is linked to the same Amazon account as your Firestick, Alexa can open apps and navigate menus by voice. This works for getting to the WiFi settings screen β€” but has one critical limitation.

⚠ The limitation
Alexa can navigate to the WiFi settings screen but cannot type the WiFi password for you. Once Alexa opens the network settings, use the Fire TV app on your phone to type the password.

Voice commands that work

"Alexa, go to WiFi settings on Firestick"
"Alexa, open network settings on Fire TV"
"Alexa, go to settings on Firestick"
  1. Say a voice command to Amazon EchoUse one of the commands above.
  2. Alexa opens Settings or Network on FirestickThe screen appears on TV.
  3. Connect phone to same WiFi and open Fire TV appPair with the Firestick.
  4. Use the Fire TV app keyboard to select network and type passwordConnection completes once the password is accepted.
    βœ— Firestick fully offline?
Alexa cannot help if the Firestick has no network at all. Use Method 2 (hotspot trick) first.

Method 5 β€” OTG Keyboard or Mouse

Best for Situation E β€” no second phone, no CEC, no Alexa, nothing else works. This is the hardware fallback that works completely offline without any other device. A micro USB OTG adapter lets you plug a standard USB keyboard or mouse into the Firestick's power port. You can then navigate the entire Firestick interface with keyboard arrow keys and type the WiFi password.

What you need

1
Micro USB OTG adapter with pass-through power
$5 to $10 on Amazon. Must have a USB-A port AND a micro USB power port.
2
USB keyboard or mouse
Any standard wired or wireless USB keyboard. Wireless with USB dongle also works.
3
Not the Fire TV Stick Lite
Fire TV Stick Lite does NOT support OTG cables. Use a different method.
  1. Unplug Firestick power cable from micro USB portDisconnect cleanly before attaching the adapter.
  2. Connect OTG adapter to FirestickPlug the adapter's micro USB end into the Firestick, then reconnect the power cable into the OTG adapter's pass-through power port.
  3. Plug USB keyboard into OTG adapter's USB-A portWireless dongles also work here.
  4. Power on Firestick via TV HDMIUse keyboard arrow keys to navigate. Arrow keys = move, Enter = select, Backspace = back.
  5. Navigate to Settings β†’ NetworkSelect WiFi network. Type password with the keyboard. Press Enter.
    βœ“ Success
Firestick connects to WiFi. The Fire TV app on your phone works normally β€” the OTG setup is no longer needed.

Common Issues and Fixes

Fire TV app cannot find Firestick
Phone and Firestick not on the same network. Use the hotspot trick first to get Firestick online. Confirm phone is on WiFi, not mobile data.
Hotspot trick not working
SSID or password does not match exactly. Check case sensitivity. No hidden spaces. Match the exact name the Firestick used β€” including 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz band name if different.
TV remote not controlling Firestick after enabling CEC
Power cycle both devices after enabling CEC. Try a different HDMI port β€” not all ports on some TVs support CEC.
OTG keyboard not recognised
Confirm the OTG adapter has power pass-through and that power is connected. The Fire TV Stick Lite does not support OTG. Try a different USB keyboard.
Cannot remember old WiFi password
Hotspot trick will not work without it. Use HDMI-CEC (Method 3) or OTG keyboard (Method 5), or buy a replacement remote ($15–25).
