What Is Kodi and Is It Legal?

Kodi is a free open-source media player developed by the Kodi Foundation and available since 2004. It is entirely legal β€” Kodi ships on the Google Play Store and Microsoft Store and is used by millions of people for streaming personal media libraries, music, photos, and legitimate online content through official add-ons.

The legal question that comes up with Kodi is not about the app itself but about some third-party add-ons that stream unlicensed content. This guide covers the official Kodi installation β€” what you do with add-ons after is your own choice.

β“˜ Warranty & removal
Installing Kodi does not void your Firestick warranty. You can remove it any time via Settings β†’ Applications β†’ Manage Installed Applications β†’ Kodi β†’ Uninstall.

Current Version to Install β€” Kodi 21.3 Omega

Always install the current stable build directly from the Kodi Foundation. The four facts below are everything you need to know before downloading.

Download File
ARMV7A 32-bit
Always select this for Firestick. The 64-bit version causes installation errors.
Download URL
kodi.tv/download/android
Official Kodi Foundation site. Only download from here.
Install Time
Under 10 min
Including all prerequisite steps from the very beginning.

What You Need Before Starting

Confirm all four prerequisites below before you begin. Missing any one of them stops the install in its tracks.

Supported Firestick
Fire OS 7 or 8 (Android-based). Vega OS devices β€” Fire TV Stick HD 2026 and 4K Select β€” cannot sideload Kodi.
Active internet
Firestick must be connected to WiFi for the download and install to complete.
500MB free storage
Check at Settings β†’ My Fire TV β†’ About β†’ Storage before starting.
10 minutes
Full process β€” enable settings, install Downloader, download Kodi, install, first launch.

Step 1 β€” Enable Install Unknown Apps

This is the one setting change required before Kodi can be installed. You only need to do this once.

  1. Go to Settings from the home screenFrom the Fire TV home screen, navigate up to the menu bar and select the gear icon.
  2. Select My Fire TVOlder Firestick models may label this menu as Device or System β€” they are the same thing.
  3. Select Developer OptionsIf Developer Options is not visible, go to About, highlight your device name, and click it 7 times β€” Developer Options unlocks and appears in the previous menu.
  4. Select Install Unknown AppsThis opens a list of apps that are allowed to install other APKs.
  5. Find Downloader in the list and toggle to ONEven though Downloader is not installed yet, Fire OS pre-populates the list. Toggle Downloader to ON β€” that is all you change.
    βœ“ Tip
This is the only setting you change. Leave everything else default.

Step 2 β€” Install the Downloader App

Downloader is the free tool that lets you install Kodi. It is available directly on the Amazon App Store β€” no sideloading required for this step.

  1. Go to the search icon on the home screenIt is the magnifying-glass icon at the far left of the top menu bar.
  2. Search for "Downloader"Made by AFTVnews, orange icon, completely free on the Amazon App Store. Confirm the publisher β€” there are knock-offs with similar names.
  3. Download, install, and openSelect Get or Download, wait for the install to finish, then select Open.
  4. Allow storage access when promptedThe first launch asks for permission to write files. Select Allow β€” Downloader cannot save the Kodi APK without it.

Step 3 β€” Download and Install Kodi

This is the main event. Take your time on Step 4 β€” selecting the wrong APK is the #1 reason Kodi installs fail on Firestick.

  1. Open Downloader and select the URL fieldFrom the Home tab, focus the long URL text field at the top.
  2. Enter the official Kodi download URLType the URL below exactly. Alternatively, enter the Downloader code 225334 β€” same destination.
    kodi.tv/download/android
    ⚠ Source warning
Only download Kodi from kodi.tv β€” never from third-party sites. Repackaged APKs from elsewhere have been caught containing malware.
  3. Press Go and wait for the Kodi website to load in DownloaderThe official Kodi download page renders inside the Downloader browser.
  4. Select ARMV7A (32-bit) β€” this is the critical stepChoose Android on the platform list, then pick the ARMV7A (32BIT) APK. The download begins immediately.
    βœ— Do NOT select 64-bit
The ARMV8A (64BIT) APK causes installation errors on every current Firestick model. Always pick ARMV7A 32-bit.
  5. Wait for the download to completeThe APK is approximately 80MB β€” 1 to 3 minutes on most home WiFi.
  6. Select Install when promptedFire OS displays a security review screen β€” confirm and proceed.
  7. Select Done (not Open) then Delete the APK fileChoosing Done returns you to Downloader. Then confirm the prompts to delete the APK twice β€” keeping the file wastes storage on the Firestick.
    βœ“ Kodi is installed
Find Kodi in Your Apps and Channels on the Fire TV home screen. Long-press the round Select button to move it to the favourites row.

Step 4 β€” First Launch and Basic Setup

When you open Kodi for the first time it launches into a dark interface with a default skin called Estuary. Before adding content, Kodi needs to know where to find it.

1
Grant media permissions
Select Allow when Kodi asks for access to photos, media, and files. Without this, Kodi cannot index local libraries.
2
Add a media source
Navigate to Movies or TV Shows β†’ Files section β†’ Add videos β†’ browse to your media location (NAS, USB, network share).
3
Install add-ons
Go to Add-ons β†’ Download. The official repository includes video players, music services, weather, and utilities.
4
Optimize for Firestick
Open Settings β†’ Player β†’ Videos and enable Allow hardware acceleration for smoother 4K playback.

Using Kodi with an IPTV Subscription

If you have an IPTV subscription, Kodi's built-in IPTV Simple Client add-on connects it directly. This gives you live TV channels, EPG program guide, and catch-up TV inside Kodi's interface β€” no separate app needed.

  1. Go to Add-ons in KodiOpen Kodi and select Add-ons from the main home menu.
  2. Find and enable PVR IPTV Simple ClientThe PVR clients category contains the IPTV connector. Highlight it and choose Enable.
  3. Open Configure and enter your M3U URLPaste the M3U link supplied by your IPTV provider into the M3U Play List URL field. Save.
  4. Restart KodiClose Kodi completely and reopen it. The PVR backend needs a fresh start to load the channel list and EPG.
    βœ“ Success indicator
Live TV channels, EPG guide, and catch-up TV now appear in Kodi's TV section in the main menu.

Fixing Common Kodi Issues on Firestick

Five issues account for the vast majority of post-install support requests. Each one has a specific fix below.

Installation failed β€” "App not installed"
Wrong APK version selected. Delete the file and re-download, choosing ARMV7A 32BIT. Verify 500MB free storage at Settings β†’ My Fire TV β†’ About β†’ Storage.
Kodi slow or freezing
Clear cache at Settings β†’ Applications β†’ Manage Installed Applications β†’ Kodi β†’ Clear Cache. Never select Clear Data β€” it wipes your library. Enable hardware acceleration in player settings.
Buffering during streams
Usually ISP throttling of streaming traffic. A VPN encrypts the connection so the ISP cannot see what you are streaming. NordVPN and ExpressVPN both have native Firestick apps on the Amazon App Store.
Cannot find Downloader app
Search for the exact name Downloader by AFTVnews. If still not found, your device may be running Vega OS (Fire TV Stick HD 2026 or 4K Select), which blocks sideloading entirely.
Not enough storage
Delete unused apps at Settings β†’ Applications β†’ Manage Installed Applications. Kodi itself needs ~150MB plus buffer space for caching streams.

Kodi vs Dedicated IPTV Apps β€” Which Is Better for Live TV?

Kodi with IPTV Simple Client works well for live TV, but dedicated IPTV player apps like TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro are generally preferred for IPTV subscriptions because they are purpose-built for the format β€” faster channel switching, better EPG integration, and simpler setup.

If live TV and sports are your primary use case, a dedicated IPTV player app paired with a quality IPTV subscription delivers a better experience than Kodi. Our IPTV Firestick guide covers the full setup. For the IPTV services we have independently tested see our best IPTV services guide.

Kodi is the stronger choice when you want a complete media center β€” organizing personal libraries, music, photos, and online content through add-ons all in one place.
