What Is Kodi and Is It Legal?
Kodi is a free open-source media player developed by the Kodi Foundation and available since 2004. It is entirely legal β Kodi ships on the Google Play Store and Microsoft Store and is used by millions of people for streaming personal media libraries, music, photos, and legitimate online content through official add-ons.
The legal question that comes up with Kodi is not about the app itself but about some third-party add-ons that stream unlicensed content. This guide covers the official Kodi installation β what you do with add-ons after is your own choice.

Current Version to Install β Kodi 21.3 Omega
Always install the current stable build directly from the Kodi Foundation. The four facts below are everything you need to know before downloading.
What You Need Before Starting
Confirm all four prerequisites below before you begin. Missing any one of them stops the install in its tracks.
Settings β My Fire TV β About β Storage before starting.Step 1 β Enable Install Unknown Apps
This is the one setting change required before Kodi can be installed. You only need to do this once.
- Go to Settings from the home screenFrom the Fire TV home screen, navigate up to the menu bar and select the gear icon.
- Select My Fire TVOlder Firestick models may label this menu as Device or System β they are the same thing.
- Select Developer OptionsIf Developer Options is not visible, go to About, highlight your device name, and click it 7 times β Developer Options unlocks and appears in the previous menu.
- Select Install Unknown AppsThis opens a list of apps that are allowed to install other APKs.
- Find Downloader in the list and toggle to ONEven though Downloader is not installed yet, Fire OS pre-populates the list. Toggle Downloader to ON β that is all you change.
β TipThis is the only setting you change. Leave everything else default.
Step 2 β Install the Downloader App
Downloader is the free tool that lets you install Kodi. It is available directly on the Amazon App Store β no sideloading required for this step.
- Go to the search icon on the home screenIt is the magnifying-glass icon at the far left of the top menu bar.
- Search for "Downloader"Made by AFTVnews, orange icon, completely free on the Amazon App Store. Confirm the publisher β there are knock-offs with similar names.

- Open Downloader and select the URL fieldFrom the Home tab, focus the long URL text field at the top.
- Enter the official Kodi download URLType the URL below exactly. Alternatively, enter the Downloader code

- Select ARMV7A (32-bit) β this is the critical stepChoose Android on the platform list, then pick the
ARMV7A (32BIT)APK. The download begins immediately.β Do NOT select 64-bitThe ARMV8A (64BIT) APK causes installation errors on every current Firestick model. Always pick ARMV7A 32-bit. - Wait for the download to completeThe APK is approximately 80MB β 1 to 3 minutes on most home WiFi.
- Select Install when promptedFire OS displays a security review screen β confirm and proceed.

Add-ons are what make Kodi genuinely powerful. Without them Kodi is just a media organizer. With the right add-ons it becomes a comprehensive streaming platform.
Using Kodi with an IPTV Subscription
If you have an IPTV subscription, Kodi's built-in IPTV Simple Client add-on connects it directly. This gives you live TV channels, EPG program guide, and catch-up TV inside Kodi's interface β no separate app needed.
- Go to Add-ons in KodiOpen Kodi and select Add-ons from the main home menu.
- Find and enable PVR IPTV Simple ClientThe PVR clients category contains the IPTV connector. Highlight it and choose Enable.

Kodi vs Dedicated IPTV Apps β Which Is Better for Live TV?
Kodi with IPTV Simple Client works well for live TV, but dedicated IPTV player apps like TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro are generally preferred for IPTV subscriptions because they are purpose-built for the format β faster channel switching, better EPG integration, and simpler setup.
If live TV and sports are your primary use case, a dedicated IPTV player app paired with a quality IPTV subscription delivers a better experience than Kodi. Our IPTV Firestick guide covers the full setup. For the IPTV services we have independently tested see our best IPTV services guide.
Kodi is the stronger choice when you want a complete media center β organizing personal libraries, music, photos, and online content through add-ons all in one place.
